The Day After Christmas

I hope everyone had a great Christmas Eve & Day!  I'm a little tired from both so I am just going to share some pictures & do an outfit recap today.  For Christmas Eve we had a quiet dinner at home & then went to a family friend's house to see everyone, which was so nice.  Then for Christmas Day we had family friends over that we celebrate Christmas with every year.  We always have so much fun hanging out & catching up!

Christmas Outfit Inspiration

It's here, it's really really here!  I cannot believe it's Christmas Eve!  I know I've said it before, but I really love this time of the year.  I have a few presents to wrap & some more baking to do before tonight, but I'm excited to do both.  I'm really just looking forward to celebrating & spending time with my family for a few days.  Since Christmas is in full swing now I thought I would share some outfit inspiration for tonight & tomorrow, because if you're anything like me you're still undecided about what you are wearing for tonight, tomorrow, or both!

Cozy: Sweater / Jeans / Shoes / Earrings
Dressy: Dress / Shoes / Earrings

Whether you're Christmas is casual or a little more dressed up I've got you covered.  Personally I am going for something that is somewhere between the two.  I'm thinking a dress & flats, but we'll see what I actually end up in!

Cozy
A kitschy holiday sweater is perfect if you want to be comfy.  You can style it to make it look very chic & you will also look über festive.  I paired it with a pair of skinnies from my favorite denim brand Mavi; the few pairs I own from them are crazy comfortable & I really recommend giving them a try.  I also own the ballet flats that are pictured, they go with everything, don't rub or smoosh my feet, & can be worn for long periods of time with no pain.  The flats have a metallic sheen, which is perfect for the holidays.  Finally top it all off with a pair of sparkly studs to add a little more glamour to the look!

Dressy
I am in love with this dress, it is just perfect for this time of year.  It's demure, but the small cutout gives an unexpected sexy touch to it.  Add a pair of sparkly pumps, which will make it feel even more Christmas-y.  Finish off your look with earrings in the same color as the pumps & you are good to go!

I hope everyone has an amazing Christmas Eve & Christmas Day.  I am so looking forward to everything going on today & tomorrow!  Please take the time to stop to enjoy yourself & remember what the holidays are all about; love your family & cherish this time with them.  I will see you tomorrow with a little bloggy surprise!

Guest Post: Virtual Cookie Swap

I cannot believe that tomorrow is Christmas Eve!  I am so freaking excited & happy.  The holidays are literally the most wonderful time of the year.  I've been having so much fun baking up a storm.  I have made so many different types of cookies that I am going to have to share some of the recipes after Christmas, so look forward to the yumminess continuing!  Today I have a guest post from a new friend of mine, Jenny.  She is so sweet & we are sorority sisters from different chapters, needless to say I was so happy when we found each other!  We decided to do a virtual cookie swap (fun for blog friends!) & you can read my recipe for old fashion peanut butter cookies over on her blog, Sprinkles & Sundresses.
                                                                                ----------------------------------------------------------------
Hi Crumbs & Curls readers! My name is Jenny and I blog at Sprinkles & Sundresses. I am so excited to be switching places with Kristin today. We are both Alpha Gams and we actually figured out (through the magic of the internet and blog-land) that I helped initiate her chapter at Villanova last year! In fact, I probably initiated Kristin herself but we didn't know each other at the time! We have tons in common and are fast friends- it really is a small world. One of the things we have in common is that we both love to bake so we decided to do a cookie recipe swap! But first, a Q & A so you can get to know me!

Where are you from?
I'm from a suburb of Philadelphia called Cheltenham.

Where do you go to school?
I go to Muhlenberg College in Allentown, PA.

Tell me about your blog.
I blog all about my life as a college transfer student. That pretty much means I talk about whatever I feel like but I like to include recipes or crafts whenever I get the chance to do them!

What Pinterest board do you pin to the most?
Oh gosh I love Pinterest. Definitely recipes. I follow so many food bloggers that when I first log on all I see is delicious looking food. So I definitely pin to my Good Food pin board the most.

What is your guilty pleasure?
Netflix. The amount of hours I spent on Netflix is probably unhealthy. Just last semester I watched Orange is the New Black, Weeds, and I'm almost done Gossip Girl. That's a lot of hours of doing nothing. Oops.

What is your favorite dessert?
Cupcakes! They are my favorite thing to bake so I guess that makes them my favorite dessert. My absolute favorite are funfetti since I love sprinkles (thus the name sprinkles and sundresses!)

Chocolate or vanilla?
If we're talking cake then vanilla. Otherwise chocolate. Give me a hershey bar any day.

Beach or city?
Beach 100%. I don't like cities for more than short visits. I am a suburb and country kind of girl. But if I could live near the beach where it is warm all the time that would be great.

Sun or snow?
If this wasn't clear from the last question, sun! This past few days of surprise warm December days have been perfection.

Sweet or salty?
Can I have both? Especially together. Like M&Ms with popcorn. That's the best.

Now let's get down to business. The recipe!

I decided to make m&m cookies. Because I love m&m cookies. And I've been meaning to try them.
I got the recipe from my favorite food blog How Sweet Eats. You can find it here. My one comment would be that the recipe says it makes 18 large cookies or 36 small cookies. I cut it in half because I didn't need 3 dozen cookies but I only got a dozen out of it. Maybe my version of small is different than hers but just so you know!

The other change I made was that instead of normal m&ms I made some with peanut butter filled m&ms (the best kind) and some with pretzel m&ms (also pretty good). I thought this was cool because it made them a little different. They were super delicious I definitely recommend the recipe!

Here see more pretty pictures of them.

If you try these cookies let me know what different kinds of m&ms you like in them!

Have a very merry Christmas and a super happy New Year! Come visit me and say hi!

Recipe: Red Velvet Sugar Cookies

I have a small obsession with Red Velvet, it's amazing.  The cream cheese frosting is my favorite part.  When I came across a recipe for Red Velvet Sugar Cookies with Cream Cheese Frosting I knew I had to make them!
Cookies
Ingredients:
2 1/4 cups flour (or sub for gluten free)
3 tbsp. unsweetened cocoa
2 tsp. cornstarch
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup vegetable shortening
1 cup sugar
1 large egg
1 large egg white
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. lemon juice
2 tsp. red food coloring

Instructions:
-Mix together flour, cocoa, cornstarch, & baking powder in a bowl, set aside.
-With an electric mixer whip butter, shortening, & sugar until pale & fluffy.
-Mix in egg, then mix in egg white, vanilla extract, & food coloring.
-With mixer set on low speed, slowly incorporate the flour mixture, & mix until just combined.
-Cover dough & put in fridge for 2 hours.
-After chilling, shape dough into small balls & place on cookie sheet covered with parchment paper.
-With a small square piece of parchment paper between your hand & the cookie evenly flatten balls to about 1/2 inch.
-Bake at 375 degrees for 9 to 11 minutes.
-Transfer from cookie sheet onto wire cooling rack.
-Allow to cool completely then frost.
Frosting
Ingredients:
4 oz. cream cheese
1/4 cup butter, softened
3/4 tsp. vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions:
-With an electric mixer beat cream cheese & butter until pale & fluffy.
-Mix in vanilla.
-Slowly add powdered sugar while mixing.
-Blend until well combined & fluffy.
-Use to frost completely cooled cookies.
These cookies bake exactly as you place them on the cookie sheet, so if you want perfect circle you have will have to shape them that way.  After I frosted mine I decided to dress them up a bit with red & green sugar sprinkles.  These are so yummy & taste just like a red velvet cupcake!  This may be one of my new favorite cookies!

Have you ever had a red velvet cookie?

Festive Friday

I am loving being home!  It is so amazing to just relax & to have a blank 'To Do' list.  Also Coco & I have been snuggling all week, which just makes everything so much better.  So from my comfy couch Coco & I bring you Five on Friday:
{1.}
The Best News Ever
On Tuesday I received an email filled with the most amazing news: I'm going to Greece this summer!  A few months back I applied for a 6 week communications study abroad program & am ecstatic to be going.  I am the happiest girl ever, Greece just seems like such an amazing place.  The program description says, "Following a few days in Athens, the program will move to Mykonos, Delos, Santorini, Crete, Delphi (overnight ferry), Tolo, which allows for trips to Mycenae, Eleusis, Ancient Corinth, among others. The program will conclude following a brief final stay in Athens."  I know a few girls that went on last year's trip & they said it was the best experience of their lives.  They even hold class on the beaches, I seriously cannot wait!

Holiday Sparkle

Lately I have been loving sequin skirts.  They are the perfect thing to wear for holiday parties & Christmas.  I recommend keeping your other pieces minimal to really let the skirt shine (no pun intended).  I have a fabulous high wasted fit & flare gold sequined skirt that I got at J.Crew about three years ago.  I brought it home with me & am thinking about wearing it for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day & will probably style it with a long sleeve black top & black tights.  I love that these skirts serve as an outfit centerpiece.  With so many fun choices, which is your favorite?

Don't Forget To Wrap Yourself!

Faux fur jackets are a super chic way to stay warm.  I also feel like fur feels so holidayish!  I am allergic to real fur & am not a fan of it anyway so faux fur makes for an awesome alternative.  I have a jacket that I got a few years ago that I live in & get so many compliments on.  If you get one of these I guarantee you will love it!

{4.}
At Home Fashions
There have been some very festive winter & holiday ensembles making appearances in our living room lately.

My sister had her wisdom teeth out on Tuesday & has been rocking footy pj's while she recovers.  She's been very warm & snug in them, & they will be perfect for the winter time!  (She was even kind enough to let me take a picture!)  Then last night I put Coco in her Santa Paws shirt.  Sadly it is a little too small, but she sat nicely for a picture before I took it off.  I really love these two & their crazy clothing!

{5.}
Christmas Music
Keeping with the holiday theme I wanted to share one of my favorite holiday songs!

So that is all I have for today!  What are your plans for the weekend?  Hopefully something fun for the holidays!

Recipe: Gingerbread Cookies

As I mentioned yesterday my Christmas baking extravaganza has commenced!  Gingerbread cookies are a favorite of mine so I thought that they would be a good starting point.  Also my mom had the day off so I thought it would be fun to have a buddy to roll them out with!  I was right & my mom, sister, & I had so much fun making them.  This recipe is seriously delicious & if you like gingerbread, you will love these.  This is a recipe for regular cookies, but I just swap out wheat flour for my gluten free flour to make them gluten free.

They're so good even Coco wants some!

Ingredients:
1 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups brown sugar, firmly packed
2 eggs
2/3 cup molasses
1/3 cup lemon juice
6 1/2 to 7 cups flour (or gluten free flour)
2 tbsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/8 tsp. salt
2 1/2 tsp. ground ginger
2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg

Instructions:
-Beat butter on medium speed until creamy; gradually add brown sugar, beating well.
-Add eggs, molasses, & lemon juice, beat well.
-In a separate bowl combine 2 cups flour, baking power, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, & nutmeg, stir well.
-Add flour mixture to the butter mixture, beating at a low speed until blended.
-Gradually add enough remaining flour to make a stiff dough, mixing well.  (I use the full 7 cups for mine.)
-Shape the dough into 2 balls, dust your hands with flour so the dough does not stick.  Cover each with plastic wrap & chill for at least 1 hour.
-Roll out cookies, dusting hands, surface, & rolling-pin with flour to avoid sticking, cut with cookie cutters & place on cookie sheet.
-Bake at 350 degrees for 10-14 minutes or until golden.
-Transfer from cookie sheet onto wire cooling rack.
-Cool & enjoy!

More recipes will be coming, nothing puts me in more of a baking mood then the holidays!  What do you bake this time of year?
