Celebrity Style Obsession: Kendall Jenner

While I am not a fan of the Kardashians, I do love Kendall Jenner!  She has been working hard to break away from her family and make a name for herself in the fashion industry and has been quite successful with it.  Since she began modeling she has landed countless runway shows and campaigns, most notably becoming the face of Estée Lauder.  To kick off New York Fashion Week I thought it was only appropriate to take a look at a model's style and as a model 'it girl' Kendall is the perfect choice.  Since she began modeling and her star in the fashion world has risen her style has evolved and become one to watch, whether she's rocking a chic off duty look or working the red carpet Kendall always seems to nail her looks. For her street style she typically rocks denim or leather pants, but will occasionally throw in a pretty dress or top and skirt combo.  Her red carpet looks are always changing, but one thing that stays consistent is her love for showing skin in a tasteful way.  To finish off her looks Kendall never fusses too much with her hair, instead preferring a more relaxed look with her glossy locks.  Kendall's great sense of style has helped to further her career and credibility in the fashion industry and she is definitely one to look to for outfit inspiration. Here I have for you my favorite looks that she has worn.

Which look is your favorite?

Face Mask Reviews

My friend Kristi and I met early in the summer because she is dating one of my good guy friends from school, the day we met we instantly bonded over our love of all things beauty (and little dogs and Louis Vuitton and more!).  We are both completely obsessed with skincare and are constantly texting back and forth about different products we're trying.  Kristi knows a lot about beauty and is quite the product aficionado so I thought it would be awesome to bring you all a post from her.  Her and I have talked a lot about face masks so when she asked me what she should write about I instantly knew that she needed to tell you about some of the masks she has tried!  Without any further ado here is Kristi's post reviewing the best and worst face masks.

As a girl who always tries to keep up with the latest skincare (and beauty) trends, I have found that a major skincare favorite among women is a good face mask! There’s just something about a nice mask after a long day that really seems to wash away all of the stress! (Tip: Pair it with a good glass of wine or a hot cup of tea, and you’ve got yourself a perfect girls night!)

I have combination and sensitive skin, and it took me awhile to find a mask that I truly love! Fortunately, I was able to find a few great ones! Here are my faves, and my not so faves.

I have to say, this is the holy grail of face masks. This particular mask hardens after about 10 minutes on your face and seriously does wonders. It leaves your face feeling like silk and gives you a gorgeous glowy look! I even used it on my boyfriend, who happened to really love it, and I couldn’t believe how incredible his skin looked after using it too! It retails for about $27 and is worth every penny.

One minute is all it takes to make your skin feel amazing! Once this product is on wet skin, it heats up and creates an extremely relaxing effect! I really wish I could leave it on longer! Not only does this mask feel amazing and leave my skin looking great, the price is right! This retails for around $6.99 and can be purchased at your local drugstore. Totally worth the buy!

This mask was recommended to me by Kristin (aka The Blush Blonde) and I seriously love it! For about $7.99, you get one pound of dried clay that literally will last you forever. After mixing with equal parts water and honey, it created a clumpy paste that dries on your skin. After washing it off, my skin looked great! The only downfall to this product for me was how clumpy it was! But for how great my skin looked, I will definitely take the clumps! Overall, a great purchase!

This was my first time using a sheet mask and what an interesting experience it was! First of all, it wasn’t easy to apply at all! I had to apply it while laying down, which made the process so much harder! Not only did I first put it on my hair (yuck!), it even dripped into my eye! Aside from some issues getting started, I left this mask on for about 20 minutes, and after removing it, I saw absolutely no change. Instead, I had a really wet and sticky face. It wasn’t a total waste though, I was able to get some pretty interesting Snapchats out of it, which gave my boyfriend a good laugh. The things we do for beauty! Definitely not worth the $8.00!

After hearing so many positive things about this mask, I couldn’t wait to try it. After finally convincing myself to splurge on the $69 bottle of mud, I went for it! Unfortunately, this mask completely let me down! It left my skin feeling extremely dry and even broke me out! I was so upset! Definitely not worth it in my book!

Friday Favorites

Favorite Transitional Look Easy Neutrals
I always feel like transitioning from summer to fall can be difficult because the weather is so all over the place.  I'm loving a neutral palette for this time of year and classics like jeans and a tshirt that can be worn a variety of different ways.

Favorite Boots Tan Boots with Zipper Details
When it comes to boots tan has always been a favorite of mine and I love this pair I saw on Pinterest.  I'm also a big fan of zipper detailing on boots because I think it adds a little something.

Favorite Hairstyle Celtic Knot
Byrdie has six easy hairstyles to try for this upcoming weekend and I love this pretty knot.  To me it looks super intricate, but they swear it looks more complicated than it actually is!

Favorite Arm Party Simplistically Pretty
While I love a good arm stack, this simple combination looks so pretty and chic.

Favorite Shoes Laceup Flats
I have been seeing laceup flats everywhere and am really loving them!  They come in so many different colors and look great with everything from dresses to skirts to shorts and more.

What are your favorites this week?

Recipe: Homemade Caramel

I love caramel, but since I found out I had food allergies a few years ago I haven't really been able to have it.  I've been dying to learn to make homemade caramel for some time and I decided it was time to finally go for it.  I found this recipe and then put my own spin on it, using it as a guide.  I was quite surprised with how easy caramel is to make.  I was really happy with how it came out, but I did overcook the sugar a touch so yours should come out a bit lighter than mine; just watch your sugar closely while it's cooking so you don't make the same mistake.  After I made the caramel and let it cool completely I used it to make salted caramel popcorn, which I will be sharing the recipe for next week (spoiler: it's delicious!).  This caramel can also be used for a variety of other projects and I can't wait to find more things to use it with, it's also great if you're looking to avoid the high fructose corn syrup filled store bought caramel (I'm allergic to the high fructose corn syrup).  Read below to find out how you can make caramel for yourself and come back next week to learn how to make salted caramel popcorn with it!

Ingredients:
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
6 tbsp. butter, cut up
1/2 cup heavy cream

Instructions:
-Cut the butter into six pieces, one tablespoon each, set aside.
-On medium heat, heat the white and brown sugar in a saucepan.  Stir constantly with a wooden spoon. The sugar will get clumpy and become a thick brown liquid, it is important not to overcook or burn it in this step.
-Once the sugar has completely melted into a liquid add the butter to the saucepan.  When the butter is added the liquid sugar will bubble, so be careful not to burn yourself.
-Stir the butter into the liquid sugar until it is completely melted.
-Slowly add the heavy cream by drizzling it into the sugar/butter mixture and stirring until completely incorporated.  Again be careful because the mixture can bubble when you add the heavy cream.
-Boil the mixture for one minute.
-Remove from heat and allow to cool.
-Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
-Enjoy!

Tuesday Ten: Healthy Hair Tips

1. Skip a wash (or a few!).
You've heard it before and you're going to hear it here again washing your hair everyday isn't good for it; constant washing strips your hair of its natural (conditioning) oils, drys it out, and leaves you prone to more damage.  Now I'm not saying to never wash your hair, but try your hardest not to wash it every time you shower (aka everyday); I aim to wash my hair 2-3 times a week depending on my activities and how it's looking.  Get yourself a good dry shampoo, my favorite is Batiste in Coconut and Exotic Tropical scent (it's smells so yummy!), and there are countless others available so the trick is just finding one you like to spruce up your locks between washes.  Also if you're worried your hair will be more oily if you don't wash it all the time, in the beginning it will be (baby powder and dry shampoo can help with that though), but your hair will "train" itself to be less oily overtime and the results are well worth the transition period, trust.

2. Avoid harsh chemicals.
I am huge on avoiding using products with sulfates, silicones, and alcohol in your hair.  Sulfates are harsh chemicals that can strip your hair and skin of natural oils, lead to dry skin, and cause irritations (I can attest to this first hand).  Since I've switched to sulfate free shampoo, a more mild way to cleanse your hair, I've seen a big difference in the health of my hair, including my scalp, which is no longer red, dry, or itchy.  My favorite sulfate free shampoos are L'Oreal EverCrème, Not Your Mother's, and Living Proof PhD.  Silicones are used in most anti-frizz products, but I like to avoid them because they can actually build up on your hair and eventually make it frizzier; for anti frizz products without silicone try EverSleek Frizz Taming Crème Serum and Living Proof No Frizz Nourishing Styling Cream.  Lastly, I try to avoid alcohol as much as I can because it can really dry out for your, but sometimes this is hard to do when a hairstyle calls for hairspray.

3. Use a clarifying shampoo.
A good (sulfate free) clarifying shampoo will help to rid your hair of any buildup that occurs from the products you are putting in your hair.  Using one creates a clean slate for your products so that they can work better and it's a great breather for your scalp.  It's best if you use a clarifying shampoo only once every three to four weeks or else you run the risk of drying out your hair.  My new favorite clarifying shampoo is Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Purifying Shampoo and I'm also dying to try Aveeno Pure Renewal Shampoo.

4. Deep condition often.
Deep conditioning your hair is vital to keeping your it moisturized and healthy.  Keeping your hair well moisturized can help to prevent split ends, repair existing ones, reduce them, and make your hair soft and silky.  I've found that deep conditioning every seven to ten days has really helped to improve the look and health of my hair.  My favorite deep conditioners are Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment, Clairol Hair Food Moisturizing Mask, Queen Helene Cholesterol Hair Conditioning Creme, and this DIY Honey Hair Mask.

5. Get a wide tooth comb.
Your hair is most fragile when it's wet, which means it's most prone to breakage, something you must try to prevent at all costs.  You shouldn't just run a brush through wet or damp hair because that is how you will damage it, instead you need to gently brush/detangle it with a wide tooth comb because is easier on your hair; you can also try The Wet Brush, a brush specifically designed to easily and gently detangle hair, in place of a comb.  A comb is also important to help evenly distribute conditioner through your hair, in the shower use the comb after you apply conditioner or deep conditioner to make sure each strand is covered.

6. Use what's in your kitchen.
Using ingredients found in the kitchen is my favorite ways to make treatments for my hair.  It's amazing just how many food items have incredible benefits for your hair - eggs, baking soda, avocado, olive oil, and more can all do different things for your hair.  Check out Pinterest, beauty websites, and here for different ways to use food to help the health of your hair.

7. Coconut oil is your best friend.
I am obsessed with using coconut oil in my hair!  It has a few different uses and is a great way to moisturize your hair.  When I know I'm going to wash my hair in the morning I rub some coconut oil into my ends to give them some extra moisture.  Additionally, You can take a little coconut oil and rub it on your ends before showering to protect them from shampoo drying them out.  I also love to section my hair and saturate each section in coconut oil, braid it, and sleep in it overnight to give it a really deep conditioning, when I wash my hair the next day it is always ridiculously soft and silky. Moreover, coconut oil is great to mix with different things to create hair masks with many different benefits.  Lastly in a pinch (or if you're more into natural beauty) a little bit of coconut oil can serve as an anti frizz treatment, just put a small amount on damp hair like you would any other anti frizz product.

8. Air dry.
I'm not going to lie to you, I hate the way my hair looks when I let it air dry, but taking a break from the heat from time to time is a necessity for healthy hair.  When I'm going to let my hair air dry completely I usually put it in a braid when it's about seventy five percent dry so that it gets a nice wave to it or I can just rebraid it when it's dry for a chic braided hairstyle.  Even when you are going to blow-dry your hair it's important to let it air dry before blow drying or you will damage your hair even more.  I let my hair air dry fifty to seventy five percent of the way before drying it, which has really helped to keep my hair healthy; a bonus is that you spend less time blow drying your hair and having to hold up the heavy blow dryer.

9. Use protection.
If you want to prevent damage using heat protection spray is an absolute necessity before using any heated styling tools.  My favorite heat protection spray is TRESemmé Platinum Strength Strengthening Heat Protect Spray; spray damp strands before blow drying, and then spray dry hair before flat ironing or curling.

10. Give yourself a trim.
Everyone says that in order to keep your hair healthy you need to get a trim every six to eight weeks, but since hair doesn't grow that fast, only about half an inch a month, if you trim your hair that often you will land up constantly cutting off your new growth.  However split ends will ruin your healthy hair, so you do need to get rid of them and the best way to do that is by giving yourself a trim by cutting off just the split ends.  Is this time consuming?  Yes, but it's definitely worth it and it's the perfect activity to do while watching a show or a movie.  Learn how to do this from Cara of Maskcara here.
