Skincare 101: Moisturizers

When it comes to beauty I think that the most important step after cleansing is moisturizing.  I have really dry skin that only seems to get drier as I get older so lately I've really been exploring all the different moisturizers the beauty world has to offer.  There are several different types of moisturizers depending on the time you use it and/or your skin type.  Today I am going to show you the different moisturizers available and when to use them.

When to Use: Use this moisturizer everyday to hydrate skin, protect it from the elements, and to provide sun protection.
Splurge: This moisturizer is packed with antioxidants including Vitamin-C to shield skin from environmental factors and neutralize free radicals.  It also works to repair skin and SPF protects skin from the sun.
Save: This is the moisturizer I have been using for years and I absolutely love it.  It is hypoallergenic and contains southernwood and vitamins to help skin to retain moisturizer.  It also contains SPF to prevent sun damage.
My Advice: Apply in the morning after washing and toning skin, allow to soak in and apply makeup over it.

When to Use: When you need a daytime moisturizer with some color and a little something extra during the day.
Splurge: I recently started using this BB Water and have really been loving it.  This gives a nice sheer wash of color, SPF 30, and also acts a primer for makeup.
Save: This was the first BB cream I ever used and it's a great product.  It's thicker then the "splurge" and offers more coverage; other benefits are that it renews, brightens, evens, and hydrates skin.
My Advice: I like to mix my BB creams with my daytime moisturizer just to make them more hydrating for my ridiculously dry skin and to thin out the color a bit.

When to Use: Apply at night before bedtime.
Splurge: This super hydrating cream helps to replenish skin's moisture with hyaluronic acid and shea butter, among other key ingredients.  I've used this before and it works really well to moisturize and nourish dry skin.
Save: This is the night cream I've been using for a few months and it works great for dry skin.  I really like that it's packed with vitamins and antioxidants to neutralize free radicals while you sleep.
My Advice: At night remove makeup, wash and tone your face, apply generously.

When to Use: These are best when you need a lightweight moisturizer and are great for those prone to breakouts.
Splurge: This gel cools when applied to skin, which is a pretty neat feeling.  It works to hydrate, tighten pores, detoxify, absorb excess oil, and smooth and brighten skin.
Save: This gel absorbs instantly leaving skin free of greasiness.  It's packed with hyaluronic acid to lock moisture into skin and strengthen the skin's barrier.
My Advice: These are especially great for summertime when skin isn't as dry, I also like to use the Boscia Gel when I'm experiencing a breakout.

When to Use: When skin needs extra moisture, a necessity in the winter.
Splurge: I know this is like the millionth time that I've mentioned on here how obsessed I am with this.  It has countless benefits that include hydrating, refining texture, clarifying, and nourishing skin.  Well worth the splurge!
Save: This contains ten oils to moisturize skin, and retinol and Vitamin-C to improve and brighten skin.  A great alternative to use instead of the Nude Skincare Oil.
My Advice: Wash and tone face, press a few drops into skin and apply moisturizer on top.  I love to put on facial oil right when I get out of the shower, put on body lotion, and then put my face moisturizer on.

When to Use: If you want intense overnight hydration or other benefits.
Splurge: This leave on overnight mask works to repair skin with vitamins, honey, and omegas 6 and 9.  It also forms a moisture barrier to give you healthier skin.  I've recently started using this and have been really happy with the results and my skin has felt significantly more hydrated.
Save: This cream/gel hybrid is the perfect introduction to overnight masks and it's actually the first one I used.  There's several different types that have different benefits, but the honey (pictured here) nourishes and moisturizes dry skin.
My Advice: Apply a few drops of facial oil and then apply this.

When to Use: Day and night on under eye area.
Splurge: This lightweight eye cream works to reduce puffiness and dark circles.  It also nicely hydrates the delicate eye area.
Save: Filled with vitamins to moisturize and help smooth wrinkles for the area around the eyes.
My Advice: Pat on eye cream with your ring finger because it will not tug at your skin.

When to Use: When you need a little extra hydration.
Splurge: This vitamin packed mist hydrates skin and protects against environmental factors.
Save: I recently started using this and am loving it!  This herb filled mist works to boost hydration.
My Advice: Spritz on throughout the day when your skin starts to feel dry (it's ok to spray over makeup!) and spritz on at night before bed.

The moisturizer you use really depends on the type of skin that you have, but I recommend at the least everyone have a day cream, night cream, and eye cream in their beauty arsenal.  You can also change up your moisturizers depending on the time of year because your skin changes with the seasons.  There are so many different options for moisturizers available, but the ones I have listed here are ones that I personally use or ones that I have heard the best reviews for.  My best advice is to get to know your skin so that you can properly take care of it and achieve a glowing complexion!

What is your favorite moisturizer to use?

Basic Morning Beauty Routine

I love it when I see other bloggers share their routines and I haven't shared mine in a while so I thought it would be fun to share my morning beauty routine.  If you know me then you most likely know I am not a morning person, because of this on days I have class I have a very streamlined routine so I can get out the door as quickly as possible.  My best time saving tip for other non morning people is to shower at night because that will cut a huge chunk out of your morning routine.  On these days I do a basic makeup look that focuses on clear skin, lots of lashes, and sometimes a strong lip.  Below I have for you my everyday routine!

WASH: I started using Simple Micellar Cleansing Water at the beginning of last semester and I absolutely love it.  All I have to do is saturate a cotton pad and wipe my face and neck off with it.  My skin is super dry and this is a great way to gently "wash" my face without drying it out.  Since using this I have also been able to cut down my routine a tiny bit because it is definitely quicker than washing my face with cleanser and water.

MOISTURIZE: I use a lot of moisturizer for daytime in the winter to hydrate my dry skin and help to protect it from the elements.  What I do is press (yes press, not rub!) a few drops of Nude Skincare Progenius Omega Treatment Oil onto my face and neck; this oil really helps to give my skin a pretty dewy glow.  I then mix Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer with a few drops of Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water in Fair and apply that to my face; this combination gives my skin a nice sheer wash of color, adds more moisture, and adds sun protection.

HAIR: If I didn't wash my hair the night before (I wash my hair every few days) I hit the roots with Batiste Dry Shampoo in Tropical, rub it in, and brush it through.  This soaks up any oil and gives my hair a nice coconut scent.  I'll then style my hair, which typically includes running a flat iron over it.

TEETH: I'm kind of a freak about dental care and brush my teeth every morning with my Sonicare Toothbrush and Colgate Optic White Toothpaste.  If you're looking for a good whitening toothpaste I have been using this one for years and highly recommend it.  I also absolutely love my Sonicare toothbrush!

CONCEAL: I have a three step system to apply concealer under my eyes to help with the dark rings I have.  First I apply three dots of Benefit Stay Don't Stray in Light/Medium, which is a concealer primer, and blend it with a concealer brush.  For the next step I lightly apply Benefit Cosmetics Boi-ing Industrial- Strength Full Coverage Concealer in Light under my eyes, blending with the same concealer brush, and at this point I also apply it to any blemishes or red marks.  The last step is to lightly apply Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder also with the concealer brush.  This system helps to cover up rings and brighten under my eyes.

MASCARA: I've talked about CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion Mascara in Very Black on here quite a few times before because it is my favorite mascara.  It adds volume to my lashes, doesn't clump, and lasts all day.  I curl my lashes and add two coats of mascara to my top lashes and one coat on my bottom lashes.

BLUSH: I use Benefit Cosmetics CORALista to add a nice healthy flush to my face.  To apply it I smile and put it on the apple of my cheeks and up my cheekbones with a blush brush.

LIPS: On most days I stick with a simple lip balm on my lips, one of my favorites is Kiss My Face Organic Lip Balm in Coconut Pineapple.  If I'm applying a lip color I'll first line my lips with Rimmel Moisture Renew Universal Lip Liner in Transparent and then I'll put on a color, lately my favorite is NARS Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencil in Train Bleu.

There were lots of gorgeous looks at Sunday's Golden Globe Awards, but in comparison to last year I was kind of underwhelmed.  Don't get me wrong I definitely have my favorites, but I just had so many more last year and I feel like there weren't as many 'wow' moments for me in terms of fashion.  Below I have put together my favorites from this year to make up The Blush Blonde Golden Globes Best Dressed List.

Rosie Huntington Whitely in Atelier Versace  |  Kate Hudson in Michael Kors Collection  |  Brie Larson in Calvin Klein

Jenna Dewan Tatum in Zuhair Murad Couture  |  Sophia Bush in Narciso Rodriguez  |  Gina Rodriguez in Zac Posen

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior  |  Zendaya in Marchesa  |  Kate Bosworth in Dolce and Gabbana  |  Olivia Munn in Michael Kors Collection  |

5 Ways to Use Coconut Oil For Beauty

You can use coconut oil for seemingly anything - and I do; I even joke that I think coconut oil is the answer for just about everything.  My whole family is actually obsessed with coconut oil and my Mom has to buy a giant tub of it at Costco for all of us.  While it's great to cook with I always keep a container of it in my bathroom too because as I'm sure you can guess my favorite way to use this magic oil is for beauty.  Since it has a million different uses it's a great way to add more natural products to your beauty regimen and today I have for you five very simple ways that you can incorporate coconut oil into your beauty routine.

1. Body Moisturizer
I think the most obvious use for coconut oil in beauty is as a moisturizer for your body.  Using coconut oil on your body is especially helpful during the winter months when skin tends to be significantly drier.  You can use it as a spot treatment for areas that are extra dry or you can apply it head to toe.  My favorite time to use it as a moisturizer is after a shower; if you shower at night pat your skin dry to leave some moisture behind and then apply coconut oil all over your body, including your feet, allow it to soak in for a few minutes before putting on your clothes for the softest skin of your life.

2. Hair Treatment
Coconut oil can be used alone or combined with other ingredients (like it is here) to make an intensive hair treatment.  Using a coconut oil hair treatment will bring life back to dry hair, making it softer, shinier, and healthier.  There are a few different ways I like to put just coconut oil in my hair, I usually either rub it into the ends at night before I go to bed when I know I am going to wash my hair in the morning or I section my hair and saturate each individual section with coconut oil for a really intense treatment.

3. Facial Cleanser
You can use coconut oil to wash your face as a natural and inexpensive alternative to oil cleansers.  If you're not sure about an oil cleanser remember this, coconut oil works to gently break down the oil in your skin without drying it out.  To use it as a cleanser you will need coconut oil, and a wash cloth. Take enough coconut oil to cover your face, rub it between your hands to warm it so that it becomes a liquid, and apply to your face, massaging in a circular motion.  Wet the washcloth with the warmest water your skin can handle, and wring it out.  Take the damp cloth and lay it over your face for thirty seconds to one minute; this steams your skin and allows the pores to open up.  Remove the cloth and gently scrub your entire face with it in a circular motion.  Finish by splashing some warm water on your face.  Pat skin dry, then use toner & moisturizer as normal.

4. Cuticle Oil
Everyone suffers from dry cuticles from time to time and coconut oil is the natural alternative to cuticle oils you see in stores and at beauty salons.  I like to take a little coconut oil and rub it on my cuticles at night before bed so it can soak in overnight.  This will help to prevent dry, cracked, and peeling cuticles, which are never cute!

5. Eye Cream
If your eye area is feeling particularly dry swap your regular eye cream out for coconut oil for a few days.  Warm a tiny bit of the oil in the palm of your hand, dip your (clean) ring finger in the oil and gently tap it along the eye area.  Doing this is sure to bring the skin around your eyes back to life and is great to do from time to time to keep everything moisturized.

Do you use coconut oil in your beauty routine?  If you do let me know below, I'd love to hear how you use it!
