Chronic Illness Beauty Must Haves

I know for me that showering, doing my hair and makeup, and pretty much anything related to getting ready to go out is physically difficult for me even on a "good" day.  However, a bad day it makes it all about a million times more difficult and exhausting.  For as long as I've been sick I've pretty much always had more bad days than "good" ones, but recently the bad days are even more frequent and the the "good" days are few and far between.  As I'm sure you can imagine this all means that getting ready to go out has gotten increasingly harder for me, but looking good (or even just decent at this point) when I'm out and about is not something I'm willing to give up on.  It's no secret that I'm a beauty aficionado so it's probably not a surprise that I've found a few products that help me to get ready quicker and make it a little bit easier for me.

Below I'm sharing the products that help me to streamline my routine and cut down on the time and energy used.  While these are all amazing for people with chronic illness they're also great for healthier people who need to cut down on their routine (like Moms or college students) or who are feeling lazy when getting ready!

I would have to say that dry shampoo is definitely the #1 beauty product you need if you're suffering from chronic illness.  For me washing my hair is one of the most physically challenging things I have to do and dry shampoo helps me to go days between washes and makes my hair still look (and smell) good.  Even on those days that I really need to wash my hair, but feel way too sick to do it this saves me from having greasy hair and leaves me feeling fresh! (Pro Tips: Apply at night before bed so that the product absorbs better and doesn't leave behind the look of residue in your hair.  Also make sure to use it each night before a day that you won't be washing your hair.)

Styling my hair after it's been washed (blow drying, flat ironing, etc.) is also incredibly difficult for me.  When I wash my hair and know that I don't have something coming up that I would want it "done" for (an event, blog photoshoot, etc.) I let it air dry, which in addition to being easier physically it's also so much healthier for my hair.  In order to allow your hair to air dry, but still look good you need some product to style your hair, especially in the summer.  I love an air dry cream like this or sea salt spray like this to give my hair a pretty, but super low maintenance, look.

There are so many uses for Aquaphor that it can be used in the place of multiple products, which is a great time saver.  You can use it as a lip balm, to moisturize your skin, to calm any skin irritations, to help with a cut, to remove makeup, to tame your eyebrows, and so much more.  Having this multitasking product is a necessity for me and I make sure to keep it close in case I need it.  If you would like a more natural alternative to Aquaphor though I absolutely love this from Farmacy.

My Crohn's disease makes my skin really dry so I am constantly looking for ways to help soothe and moisturize it.  This facial spray is a quick and simple way to add some hydration to my skin without the energy it takes to put on more lotion.  It also calms down irritations, can be used as a toner (and since it's a spray it's easier than using a toner with a cotton ball), and feels great to use when you have a migraine or headache.

After dry shampoo micellar water the #2 beauty product you need if you're suffering from chronic illness.  Micellar water uses molecules to remove dirt, oil, and makeup from the skin.  It can be used to remove makeup or as an all in one cleanser/toner.  You just apply some to a cotton ball or pad and swipe it over your face, you don't have to scrub at your skin or rinse it afterwards.  I like to use this in the morning to wash my face; eliminating a traditional cleanser and using this in its place is physically much easier for me and it helps me to save energy.

Wet Brushes have super flexible bristles that don't get caught in your hair.  They make brushing your hair easier and help you to avoid tangles and pulling your hair.  This is great because it takes less energy to brush your hair and prevents it from becoming painful.  Since the bristles are so flexible they will also not pull out your hair, which is important if you're having issues with hair falling out (from illness, medication, etc.).

When I get a migraine I want my hair off my face, but using a traditional hair tie can make my headache worse.  I picked up these a few months ago at Sephora and was instantly hooked.  The shape of this unique "hair ring" was created so that it would not feel too tight or leave an indentation in hair.  However, I love it because the shape of this also helps to avoid headaches from forming due to having your hair up and I've found that it doesn't further aggravate my migraines either.  Additionally, I find these easier to use than a traditional hair tie and it doesn't feel like a wrestling match to put my hair up, which in turn uses less of my limited energy.

Many people with chronic illnesses take medication that makes their skin extra sensitive to the sun and in addition to taking several of those myself I have crazy fair skin.  To be honest the sun makes me feel pretty sick, but I do like to get out in it from time to time.  As you can imagine I always need to be careful when I'm in the sun and take the proper precautions.  One thing that has always deterred me from heading out in the sun was having to lather up in sunscreen, but this year I've found a solution to my problem: powder sunscreen.  This stuff is amazing you just dust it on and you're good to go sans that gross greasy feeling from traditional sunscreen and the loads of energy it takes to apply.  Now I don't use this when I go to the beach or pool because it would be insanely expensive to use on my entire body, but it's perfect for when I head out and need to protect my face, chest, shoulders, etc. (which is anytime I do anything outside for more than ten minutes).  It's been a major energy saver for me and has helped me to better protect my skin from the sun.

Above I mentioned that for me washing my hair is one of the most physically difficult things I have to do.  Shampooing and conditioning my hair is so exhausting, however I've found a way to cut down on that and use just one product without sacrificing the health of my hair.  dpHue ACV Hair Rinse can be used in place of both shampoo and conditioner to cleanse and condition your hair.  You just wet your hair and squeeze out excess water, use the bottle tip to create a few small parts in your hair and gently squeeze the product onto your scalp, scrub your scalp, leave on for a few minutes, and rinse thoroughly.  Using the ACV Rinse makes my hair super clean and soft and it also makes washing my hair so much easier for me.

This is handy for so many reasons and is a total game changer.  First off if you can't bend over to tie your hair up in a traditional towel hair wrap then this is your solution to that problem and it's very easy (read: not labor intensive) to use.  Next the microfiber material the towel is made of helps your hair to dry a lot faster which means if you want to blow dry your hair you'll have less work to do.  Lastly these are more gentle on your hair then a traditional terry cloth towel and that is important if you're having issues with hair falling out.  Since using this I've had less hair fall out and it also helps me to take better care of the hair I do have.

So I know that some people who have chronic illnesses are sensitive to scents, however if you are not one of those people this is a basic must have.  I am really sensitive to floral scents so I make sure to get fresh and sweet scented lotions and perfumes and you can play with what scents work best for you.  A scented cream is really important for days that you don't feel well enough to shower, instead apply scented lotion all over your body (use deodorant too!) and then put the dry shampoo in your hair and you'll smell like you've showered.  Lotions are also very helpful to those of us who get dry skin from their illness and I love this rich, yet easily absorbed option from Bath and Body Works.

Whether you're chronically ill or not are there products that you use to speed up your beauty routine?  If so share them in the comments below so I can check them out!

Must Haves

I got a deluxe sample of this in my October PLAY! by Sephora box and am totally loving it.  I've talked about my love of facial mists and this spray on here countless times so it's not really surprising that I'm loving this new one.  This spray contains glycerin to moisturize skin, essential oils to energize, Horsetail juice that contains vitamin C and antioxidants, and Echinacea GreenEnvy™, which inhibits enzymes that breakdown collagen.  I like to spritz this on before applying a moisturizer to really lock in its benefits.

I have talked about these pads so many times because they are so amazing.  They literally make my skin glow and I can see a huge difference in my skin if I forget to use them one night.  These pads use lactic and glycolic acids to gently exfoliate, and lemon peel and licorice root to brighten skin. If you only try one beauty product from my blog this is the one you need to get!

I'm a big fan of BB and CC creams because they combine makeup and skincare.  I'm a skincare fanatic and do not like to wear a ton of makeup, which makes BB and CC creams perfect for me.  I had been using this BB Water, but was not happy with the results so I decided to try the It Cosmetics CC Cream after hearing so many wonderful reviews.  I am so glad I gave this a try because I love how it works.  It covers up any skin issues while still looking natural and a little goes a long way.  Another bonus is the smell, it has a citrusy scent to it, which I love!

I talked about this last week in a post that I did about my nighttime beauty routine.  This oil is a retinoid oil that moisturizes, shrinks pores, reduces wrinkles, calms redness, and improves skin smoothness.  I've noticed a huge difference in my skin since I started using it and I recommend checking it out (Pro Tip: Go to Sephora and ask for a sample of it!).

I discussed this in the same post as the Luna Sleeping Oil.  This is a pharmaceutical-grade, lactic-acid-based treatment that works to exfoliate, plump fine lines, reduce hyperpigmentation, increase circulation, and firm skin for instant radiance.  I layer Good Genes on top of the Luna Sleeping Oil for seriously amazing skin.  I also love how this works with the previously mentioned facial pads to give me glowing, blemish free skin.

It is very important to not brush your wet hair because wet hair is more elastic and prone to breakage then dry hair is.  The Wet Brush has super flexible bristle that are gentle on hair and make it the perfect tool to brush through wet hair.  I've had mine for a couple of months now and love it so much that I've got my Mom and sister hooked on them too!  This is something that is important for everyone to use in order to keep hair healthy and prevent breakage.

I got this as a deluxe size sample from a Sephora Beauty Rewards kit and had great results from it.  I am big on micellar water, especially in the morning to wash my face, and I typically use this one, but now I am loving the more luxe version that Caudalíe makes.  I like this one so much though that I just ordered a full size bottle of it yesterday!

My hair can be a little tricky to take care of because of its color.  I've never dyed my hair before and my hair tends to hold the color of anything that touches it (like mascara and face paint).  I usually like shampoos formulated for blondes because they help to keep the color of my hair natural and care for its special needs.  Recently I've loved the cool blonde hair color that has been all the rage and was very excited when I came across this shampoo, it's a violet shampoo that works to reduce brassiness and neutralize yellow tones in all hair colors.  I've used this a few times and am hooked.  I will admit that it can be a little on the drying side, but I've been using my #10 must have to help with that.

My best friend sent me an article from InStyle about this mascara and how amazing it is.  In the article it explained that it is so popular that some Sephora's have trouble keeping it in stock.  After reading all about it I knew I had to try this mascara and am so glad I did!  It does an amazing job on my lashes, it makes them longer and more volumized, but it never clumps.  I'm still only on my first tube of this, but I plan on purchasing it again in the future.

I did this post on this hair masque a while back.  It is a really thick mask (which I love!) that brings your hair back to life and really moisturizes it.  Like I explained my previous post it is rich in rice amino acids that replicate the keratin structure of human hair.  It works to seal cuticles, repair damage, balance pH, and restore resilience.  It also smoothes hair and helps to make it more manageable.  It works to strengthen hair from the inside out and since it doesn't contain harsh ingredients it is safe for everyday use.

Must Haves

I was experiencing breakouts on my back and chest over the summer that I think were from sweating.  I started using this a few weeks ago and my breakouts have really cleared up since then.  I use it at the end of my shower and wash my back and chest with it, that way I also wash off any conditioner residue that could also clog my pores.

Ever since these came in my latest Rocksbox I cannot stop wearing them!  They are so gorgeous and the way they sparkle in real life is amazing.  Both rose gold and druzy are favorites of mine so it's no surprise I love these so much that I had to purchase them from my Rocksbox.  They also go with just about everything, which makes them perfect.

DermOrganic was sweet enough to send me a box filled with their products and this was one of them.  I have been putting this on my face every night after cleansing and my skin looks amazing.  I think this will be especially great in the winter when my skin gets really dry because it is super moisturizing.

4. September Issues
September is my favorite because it brings all new fashion!  As many of you know fashion magazines produce their best issues of the year in September as a result of this.  I spent way too much money on September Issues at Walgreens the other day and have been really enjoying reading them.  I'd have to say this Vogue is my favorite though because their September Issue is truly legendary.

5. Succulents
I have loved succulents for a while, but recently got two new ones for my new bedroom that I will be putting on my desk when I set everything up.  They are adorable and thankfully difficult to kill!  If you don't want to take care of a plant though I found this faux one, which is so cute and requires no maintenance.

6. Bralettes
I am a huge fan of the bralette trend that was big all summer and is going into fall.  Not having to wear a "real bra" sounds amazing in my book, as bralettes are so much more comfortable.  I recently picked one up at a boutique, but also have my eye on this pretty one from Nordstrom.  Bralettes are perfect to layer under your fall clothes as the temperatures cool down!

Migraine Must Haves

I used to get migraines every so often and I would just go in a dark room, sleep for a few hours, and wake up feeling good as new.  Unfortunately over the last few months my migraines have become a frequent, almost daily, occurrence.  Since I've been getting them so often I have a few essentials that make getting through a migraine (slightly) more bearable.  A few of these are recommendations from my (new) migraine doctor (who I love!) and some of them are just things that make me more comfortable.  I know that migraines are not uncommon -  I even have a few friends who suffer from them, so I thought that I would share my Migraine Must Haves for anyone else who's riding the migraine struggle bus with me.

Sound doesn't always bother my migraines, but when it does earplugs are a necessity to block out noise.  I also like to wear them when I'm trying to "sleep off" a migraine so I don't get woken up by anything and can get as much peaceful sleep as I need to feel better.  I've tried a lot of different brands of earplugs (thanks to five years living on a college campus) and the Mack's brand is my favorite.

I'm pretty much always sensitive to light when I have a migraine so a good eye mask can be super helpful.  My room has great natural light, which is amazing when I don't have a headache, but when I do it's the worst thing ever until I cover my eyes.  I haven't tried this sleep mask yet, but I hear that they're supposed to be the best so I really want to get one!

Usually when I get a migraine the number one thing I want is ice on my face and head.  I'm not sure if this is something everyone likes, but if you do an ice face mask like this one is a must.  The first really, really bad migraine I had (that wouldn't go away) my sister brought one of these to my apartment at school and it's been a lifesaver ever since!

4. Medication
At first I was trying to deal with the migraines on my own, but the medication my doctor gave me really helps!  I've also heard good things about a few over the counter medications, like Excedrin Migraine, but I can't take them because of other health problems I have.  I am not a huge fan of taking medication (hence me trying to deal with the migraines on my own), however my Dad always tells me you don't get a medal for being in pain so you might as well take the medication, and I have to admit that he's right.

This one might seem kind of silly, but I love spritzing my face when I have a migraine because it feels so refreshing.  I usually leave it by the bathroom sink and use it when I get up to go to the bathroom.  It may just be me, but I find it soothing when I have a headache!

6. Sorbet
Whenever I get a migraine I crave something cold and sweet.  I usually want ice cream, but dairy makes me sick to my stomach (which I definitely don't want!) so I love having sorbet.  I'm kind of obsessed with the Roman Raspberry Sorbetto from Talenti.  Migraine or no migraine it is so good and only has few ingredients - which is something I love!  Sorbet also has way less calories than ice cream, which makes it a healthier option and makes me feel way less guilty when I eat as much as I want (aka almost the entire thing!).

7. Vitamins
The doctor I've been going to for migraines is awesome because he's all about using non medication remedies for headaches when you can.  He gave me a list of foods that are known to cause migraines and another list of vitamins that are known to help with migraines.  Since I don't love taking medication (see #4) I do love having these alternatives!  He has me taking CoQ10, Fish Oil, Magnesium, and Vitamin B2.*
*I am (obviously) not a doctor so make sure to check with your (real) doctor before adding any vitamins or supplements to your regimen!

8. Caffeine
I found this surprising, but caffeine is actually proven to help migraines.  I have a bit of a problem with this one because I hate coffee and tea! I've been trying to drink Mexican Coke when I get a migraine even though it doesn't have as much caffeine as coffee or tea.  Yesterday I picked up a powdered green tea though that you add to a smoothie or flavored drink and I am looking forward to giving that a try!

9. Cold water
In case you haven't figured it out I want all things cold when I have a migraine.  It's always important to stay hydrated, but I think it's especially important to drink a lot when you have a headache.  I recommend keeping lots of cold water on hand for when you get a migraine!

I hope that my essentials can be helpful for my fellow migraine sufferers!  Do you like anything else when you have a migraine that I haven't mentioned?  Please leave any and all tips below, I would love to hear them!

Must Haves

It has been crazy hot lately and this has been a lifesaver!  This is so refreshing when you come in from the heat to spritz on your face and neck to cool down.  I also love putting this on before moisturizer or facial oil so that it locks in extra moisture.  I've been using this since the winter and somehow love it more each month.  Definitely a must have all the time for me!

This is amazing for moisturizing your skin and helping to keep oil production in order.  I like to put this on at night after washing my face and spraying it with the rose water from above.  I have crazy dry skin and this really helps to keep it hydrated, but never clogs my pores.

This probably seems like an odd 'Must Have' since it is a cream for diaper rash.  I've had eczema since I was a kid and used to get it all over my body, however as I've gotten older I'll just get patches of it from time to time on different spots.  The most recent eczema patch I've had was on my face and because of its location I couldn't use my typical prescription cream so my doctor recommended this.  I've been putting it on every night now for a few weeks and the eczema spot is almost gone!

Lately I've been letting my hair air dry and this is my secret for beachy waves like in this post.  Growing up I had stick straight hair and it finally has a nice texture to it when I let it air dry and this spray really brings out the waves.  I wash and condition my hair like normal, brush it out with this, add this and this, then add the sea salt spray, and let my hair air dry completely.  In addition to creating dreamy waves it also smells amazing and won't dry out your hair!

I've been wearing this romper on repeat lately.  I wore it to NYC this past week and wore it several times before that.  It's super comfy and very versatile, which makes me want to wear it all the time!  It's also on trend and keeps me cool in the sweltering temperatures we've been experiencing.  I'm sure you'll see it make an appearance on Instagram a few more times this summer!

These are my go to shoes when I know I will be doing a lot of walking.  They're very comfortable and never rub the backs of my ankles (or leave blisters) like traditional Converse sneakers do.  They also look super cute and are on point with the white sneaker trend.  You can see them in my post from my New York day trip, too.

I always like to use all natural lip balms since there is a strong chance you're going to ingest some of it.  This organic lip balm is made with beeswax and natural oils to soothe and moisturize lips.  It sort of melts onto your lips when you apply it, which feels so good.  I love it so much that I have the peppermint in my purse and keep the lemon lime by my bed!

I've been trying to remember to put this on every night before bed to combat the dark circles under my eyes.  In all honesty I haven't noticed much of an improvement yet, but I want to give it a really good try before I decide on whether I like it or not.  My goal this month is to put it on at least once every day so I can see how it works.

This is my Mary Poppins bag.  It fits everything I need for a day to day basis and is perfect for travel.  It's roomy, very lightweight, and looks adorable.  This bag is a wardrobe staple for me and well worth its price.

I have these earrings in four different colors and wear them constantly.  Lately I have been wearing the clear and silver ones I have the most because they look good with everything.  They're an easy earring to throw on with every outfit and add a little extra something to a look.  They're also really comfortable and I usually forget I have them on!

Must Haves

This shimmery powder is absolutely gorgeous!  I've been using it as a light highlighter because it doesn't deposit a lot of color, but more of an iridescent shimmer that looks beautiful.  I especially love the way it looks along the tops of cheekbones layered over blush.  I rocked it all through graduation and senior week and am completely hooked.  You can even dust some on your decollage and cleavage for special events and it gives a light, tasteful sparkle!

This is hands down my favorite chemical exfoliant and it's fun to use.  You apply a thin layer of this, wait one minute, then massage your face to roll off the cream and all the dead skin comes with it.  My face is always super smooth and looks glowy after I use this.  I alternate between this and a physical exfoliant three nights a week to free my face of any dead skin cells.  This is a must have all the time in my book.

The skin on my face has been so incredibly dry the past few months and this has been an absolute lifesaver!  Once a week, I wash my face, apply this, then leave it on as long as I can before wiping it off with a damp washcloth and applying moisturizer.  I have seen a huge improvement in my skin since I started using it and it is worth the price for how well it works.  If you're experiencing dryness on your face you have to try this!

I've been using a sample of these that I got using my Sephora Beauty Reward Points.  Oh my gosh these are AMAZING!  Seriously one of the best skincare products I have ever used and I don't say this lightly.  After a few days of using these my skin has looked the best it ever has - my pores are smaller, blackheads are gone, and my skin literally glows.  When I'm done with my sample I will be purchasing the full size!

I love dry brushing my body before I get in the shower.  It really helps to get rid of dead skin and keeps skin smoother than using an in shower exfoliant.  The best thing I've discovered though is that it helps with Keratosis Pilaris and mine has essentially disappeared.  I'm thinking about doing a post on dry brushing sometime soon!

My eyelashes are naturally super long and my bottom lashes touch under my eyes, which means I've always had an issue with mascara flaking and rubbing off under my eyes.  I really didn't want to have to worry about wiping away flakes all night for my senior ball and during graduation so I decided to gave this a try and fell in love with it.  This is the only mascara I've ever used that actually stays on my bottom lashes until I take it off.  I use Diorshow on my top lashes and then apply this to my bottom lashes and love the look.  To be honest I always thought bottom lash mascara was a gimmick, but I don't think I will ever go back to not using it now.

Lately I have been super obsessed with sheet masks and all their amazing benefits.  I've been trying so many different ones from Sephora and Ulta and have been loving the results I'm getting.  I've been doing a sheet mask once a week now and even have my Mom hooked on them!  While I've tried a bunch my favorite so far has been the Too Cool for School Egg Cream Sheet Mask, it both hydrates and brightens skin leaving it looking amazing.

With all of the events I've been to this month I have been using this constantly.  The weather has been so crazy this month - hot, cold, rainy, humid, that I need this to keep my eyeshadow in place through it all.  If you have oily eyelids you need this to keep everything in place and looking amazing through anything.
