Transfer Tips from Baby Hawk, Big Campus

Hi everyone my name is Bridget! I’m excited to be taking over for Kristin yet again and would love for you to check out my other posts here and here so you can get to know me better. I recently transferred from Rosemont College to Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, and am now living up on Hawk Hill, which is actually right up the street from Kristin. For my Communications class, I had to start a blog and decided to make it about my experience transferring colleges and myself. On my blog you can find advice about transferring schools, how to make the decision, and more. At this point, I consider myself a pro on the topic because it basically overtook my life last year!

Here's how things went for me last year: I was a going to be a Freshmen at the school I had picked, and I was really excited about all the new experiences that I would be having. Then I got to school and it was not at all what I expected or what I wanted. My roommate was awful, the food was worse than I ever imagined, and something just wasn't right; these were just a few of the problems I ran into during the first three weeks of my Freshmen year. I knew within those first three weeks that the I had picked the wrong school for me; it was nothing like I had hoped it would be. As a result of all of this I decided early in the semester that I wanted to transfer. While it was an easy decision to make, what came after was not: I was trying to adjust to being away from home, not have my parents telling me what to do, and all of the distractions that come with living in a dorm. I was on my own for the first time ever and trying to deal with hating where I was on top of all of that. All of the aforementioned was a lot to handle and very overwhelming. If you're feeling the same way that I was and don't know where to start, here is some advice:

1. Make a list about what you want in a college, at this point you know better then you did senior year of high school because you now know what you don't like.

2. Talk to your parents or family. They can be helpful and supportive, and want what is best for you!

3. Make a list of potential schools, it's important to remember that it is sometimes easier to transfer into a college than it is to apply to be a freshmen.

4. Research the schools on your list, including taking tours of the campuses if you can.

5. Give yourself deadlines for applying! This was big for me because I knew it would be easy to blow it off, but I knew I had to complete all my applications in order to transfer.

6. Apply to at least three schools so you have options and backup plans!

The most important thing to remember when looking to transfer is to remember to breath and that you're not alone. You can do this and it will all be worth it when you are at a school that you love.

This is a sample of the types of posts you can find on my blog!  It was great doing a guest post today and don't forget to check out my blog Baby Hawk, Big Campus.

  1. Hi Bridget!! Congrats on your blog (making a note here to run over and follow immediately)! I transferred colleges my sophomore year and the whole experience can feel a bit overwhelming. Mine was a wee bit different because I knew going into university that I was going to (at least WANTED to) transfer. My boyfriend and I went to two separate schools (his being the better one) our freshmen year and I knew that wouldn't work for me in the long run. I'd never suggest moving for a boy (those things tend not to work out), but I made sure I had valid reasons beyond missing him. I made sure all of my classes freshmen year transferred with credits (that's a tough one to master--to get all the classes to transfer AS the class and not just a 'credit.') Luckily, that boy and I ended up getting married several years later so I guess that worked out in the end too :) Good luck with everything!
